Britain's First Coloured Thoroughbred Born
HorsePoint - March 2007
Britain's first coloured Thoroughbred has been born at Westdown Stud in Devon. The colt, nicknamed
'Ben', is by the American coloured stallion, I Was Framed, who was the first coloured thoroughbred
to be registered by Weatherbys, the organisation responsible for the registration of all
thoroughbreds.
Ben is I Was Framed's first foal and there was only a fifty percent chance that he would inherit his famous sire's pattern, a fact which gave breeder and owner Sheena Halliwell some sleepless nights in the month leading up to his birth. "When we first saw two white legs appear, and then a brown and white head, I knew this was something really special." she said. 'Ben' will be kept entire for breeding later in life though the Halliwell's plan to race him first, an idea that has divided the British Racing public with as many as 75% believing he should not be registered to race in the UK.
