Strangles Outbreak In NZ

HorsePoint - June 2008

Racing & Sports is reporting that a case of the contagious equine disease strangles has been detected in a racehorse at Pukekohe in New Zealand’s North Island.

New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing was informed that horse has been isolated and is being treated and put in place controls to prevent any potential spread of the disease.

The confirmed horse was transported from a stable in the Taranaki region on June 17 with one other horse.

The other horse that travelled on the float is also stabled near Pukekohe and has been tested and isolated. The test results are not yet known.

NZTR today diverted two horse floats containing 18 horses from six different stables to the Hawkes Bay (North Island) showground where they will be isolated.

They will be inspected this evening by vets as a precautionary measure.

A decision will be made by the vets on whether these horses can race on Friday and Saturday at the Hawke's Bay meeting at Hastings.
